La Semana Santa…

O.K., so it was that time of year last week: Semana Santa (Holy Week), which meant a lot of this went on in the streets:

…(Yes, I know this may look bad to some of my fellow U.S. citizens–but it’s not what you think [Read: Do you really think I would have gone outside if that sort of crap was going on???])…

Now, the Holy Week here is quite different than what I’m used to seeing…Even though Spain’s not the Catholic stronghold it once was, people still honor it by carrying out procesiones–which is just a fancy term for “parades”…

Just as there are differences between how the procesiones are carried out in each town, there are also differences based on what day of Holy Week it is–what is represented in that particular procesión depends on what day it is:

Domingo de Ramos (The Sunday of Branches)–Christ’s entry into Jerusalem…

Lunes Santo (Holy Monday)–The resurrection of Lazarus & Jesus’s rage in the marketplace…

Martes Santo (Holy Tuedsay)–Jesus’s prediction of Judas’s betrayal & Peter’s denial…

Miércoles Santo (Holy Wednesday)–The conspiring of Judas with the Sanhedrin…

Jueves Santo (Holy Thursday)–The Foot Washing/Last Supper & Eucharist/Prayer in Gethsemane/Arrest of Jesus…

Viernes Santo (Holy Friday)–The imprisonment of Christ/Judgement of Pilate/The Coronation of Thorns/The Path to Calvary/Christ’s Crucifiction & Sepulchre…

Sábado Santo (Holy Saturday)–Commemortation of Christ in the tomb…

Pascua (Easter)–The Resurrection…

But still, there are some essential elements for every procesión, like:

…banners with strange symbols on them…

…hooded figures with banners and crosses…

…children (ugh, why are little Spaniards so cute???)…

…a float representing some part of the Passion…

…and of course, a statue of the Virgin…

So yeah, that’s Semana Santa in a nutshell…Has anyone else been in Spain during Holy Week–and if so, what’d ya think???…

And to my fellow Christians the world over who may be reading this–Have a blessed Resurrection Day, :-)!!!!…

And here’s a song that I think fits well with this theme (oh, Lumineers–please drop your second album soon!!!!)…
